Symptoms
Viking wine cellar problems we repair
- One zone steady while the other creeps warmer or colder
- Bottles warmer than the display claims
- Fog or droplets inside the glass door
- A hum you can feel through the shelves
- Water on the cabinet floor below the lowest rack
Cause
Why it happens
Wine needs steady temperature more than raw cooling. Most dual-zone cabinets cool both zones from one compressor, so when only one drifts, its thermistor, fan, damper or heater is usually at fault. Fog inside the glass points to a worn or misaligned gasket; hardened compressor mounts or dusty fans send vibration into the racks.
What the technician does
- Log bottle-level temperatures with probes in water-filled bottles.
- Compare each zone’s thermistor with the probes and display.
- Check the toe-kick grille, condenser, gasket, hinge and latch.
- Test with bottles in place; sealed-system checks come last.
Call right away if
- Either zone more than a few degrees above its setting for a day or more.
- A zone dropping toward freezing, which can push corks or crack bottles.
- Water running from under the cabinet onto flooring.
Between visits
- A well-stocked cabinet holds steadier; bottles act as thermal mass when the door opens.
- Vacuum the toe-kick grille every few months and keep rugs away from it.
Repair or replace?
Sensors, fans, gaskets, drains and mounts are modest repairs. A compressor failure or leak on an older undercounter unit can approach a new cabinet’s price, so weigh its age and whether a replacement fits the opening.
Viking models we work on
Viking 15- and 24-inch undercounter wine cellars, single- and dual-zone, built-in wine cabinets and columns, and beverage centers.
Questions
Viking wine cellar repair questions
How do I check my wine cellar’s real temperature?
Leave a thermometer probe in a water-filled bottle on a middle shelf of each zone for a day. A steady gap of more than a couple of degrees from the display is worth a visit.
What should the zones be set to?
Many collectors store wine long-term around 55°F. In a dual-zone cabinet, one zone often holds that for aging and the other is for serving: cooler for whites and sparkling, slightly warmer for reds.
Why is there water on the cabinet floor?
Water from frost melting off the evaporator should drain to a pan near the compressor. If the drain clogs or kinks, it collects inside; clearing the drain and checking for excess frost usually fixes it.
