Cause
Why it happens
A Freedom column is a complete refrigerator in a narrow flush cabinet, independent of its neighbor. Usual causes: a blocked toe-kick grille that makes the condenser breathe its own exhaust, a sagging panel door leaking at the gasket, a failed defrost heater or sensor, a worn evaporator fan or a drifted thermistor.
What the technician does
- Measure both columns with our own probes, not the displays.
- Check the toe-kick grille, condenser, hinges, closer and gasket contact.
- Test defrost parts, fans, thermistors and ice maker valve before the sealed system.
- Set the column back at its original depth and reveal.
Call right away if
- Fresh-food side above 40°F and not recovering, or frozen food softening
- Water running onto hardwood floors or into the cabinet base
- A burning smell, sparking or a breaker that keeps tripping
Between visits
- Keep the toe-kick grille clear and have the condenser vacuumed yearly.
- Open the door a few inches and let go; it should close and seal unaided.
Repair or replace?
A new column may not match the cutout, panels or paired neighbor, and most failures are fans, sensors, defrost parts or door hardware. Replacement gains ground with a failed compressor, sealed-system leak or unavailable board on an older column.

Why is my refrigerator column warm but the freezer fine?
Each column has its own compressor, fans and control, so the fault is in the warm cabinet: usually its evaporator fan, defrost circuit, a sensor or the door seal.
Why does the door alarm sound when the door looks shut?
The door is likely stopping a few millimeters short, from a sagging panel, loose hinge screws or a weak closer. Fix it early, before moist air starts a frost problem.
Why does my freezer column make small, hollow cubes?
Usually restricted water, not a failed ice maker: a clogged filter, a scaled inlet valve screen, a kinked line or low house pressure. We check pressure at the valve first.
