Symptoms

Thermador cooktop problems we fix

  • A Freedom surface ignoring cookware in one area
  • Induction power fading, or an area cutting out mid-sear
  • Breaker tripping when one area is set to high
  • A radiant element glowing on one ring only
  • A gas burner that sparks but will not light

Cause

Why it happens

Freedom induction drives an inductor grid from power modules, cooled by a fan pulling air from the cabinet below. Block that air and the control cuts power, which feels like a failing cooktop. A dead area usually maps to one module. Radiant faults trace to a limiter, relay or element; gas faults often start with a spill.

What the technician does

  • Map where the fault appears, using our own cookware.
  • Check the cooling path and fan, then load the area at full power.
  • Test radiant elements, limiters and relays one at a time.
  • On gas models, check pressure and ignition; leak-check any opened joint.

Call right away if

  • Cracked glass on induction or electric models: stop using it and switch off the breaker.
  • An element or zone that will not switch off
  • Gas odor: turn knobs off, close the valve if safe; if strong, leave and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.

Between visits

  • Keep the space beneath an induction cooktop clear of pans, towels and boxes.
  • Use flat, magnetic cookware, and retire pans whose bases rock on the glass.

Repair or replace?

Gas and radiant cooktops usually merit repair: their parts are discrete, and a new unit may not fit the cutout. On older induction, new glass plus electronics can approach replacement cost; we say so after diagnosis.

Thermador models we work on

Freedom and Masterpiece induction, Masterpiece radiant, Star Burner gas cooktops and Professional rangetops, 30 to 48 inches, earlier models while parts last.

Questions

Thermador cooktop repair questions

Why won’t part of my Freedom surface detect the pan?

Test the pan in an area that works. If it is recognized there, the cooktop is the suspect, and the location points us to one module.

Is a buzzing induction cooktop faulty?

Usually not: cookware vibrates at high settings, and the fan runs after cooking. A grinding fan, or a loud click before an area cuts out, deserves a look.

My gas burner sparks but won’t light. What should I check?

Let it cool, then make sure the cap is dry, clean and seated flat. If it still fails, or no burner lights, it needs testing.
