Symptoms
Thermador range problems we repair
- Star Burner flame tall on one side, weak on another
- Igniter clicking after the burner has lit
- ExtraLow burner goes out and stays out
- Gas oven slow to light while the igniter glows
- One oven of a double-oven range dead or inaccurate
Cause
Why it happens
A pro-style range puts a sealed-burner cooktop, one or two ovens and often a griddle on one chassis. Residue in Star Burner notches or an off-center cap skews the flame. ExtraLow relights every cycle, so a weak spark leaves it out. All-gas ovens often fail at the igniter; dual-fuel ovens at an element, sensor or relay.
What the technician does
- Measure supply and manifold pressure with burners running.
- Read the flame around each star; cycle every ExtraLow burner.
- Probe each oven; test igniter current draw, or each element and sensor.
- Leak-test every gas connection we opened.
Call right away if
- Gas smell: stop cooking, close the supply valve if safe; if strong, leave and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
- Clicking that continues with every knob turned off
- Scorching or a hot electrical smell at the back of the range
Between visits
- After a boil-over, let the burner cool, dry it fully and reseat the cap flat.
- Clear ports with a straightened paper clip; wooden picks break off inside.
Repair or replace?
The chassis, cavities and cooktop deck rarely fail; electrodes, spark modules, igniters, elements and sensors do, and each can be tested first. Several systems failing on an aging range with an unsupported board makes the case for replacement.
Thermador models we work on
Pro Harmony, including standard-depth, and Pro Grand ranges, all-gas and dual-fuel, 30 to 60 inches, plus earlier professional ranges where parts exist.
Questions
Thermador range repair questions
Why does my burner keep clicking after it lights?
The reignition system cannot sense the flame: often a dirty or cracked electrode, a misseated cap, moisture, or a ground or polarity fault.
Is it normal for an ExtraLow burner to go out?
On the lowest settings, yes; it is designed to cycle off and relight. It is a fault if the flame never returns or the burner stops pulsing.
My gas oven takes minutes to light. Is that dangerous?
Usually a weak hot-surface igniter that glows but no longer lets the valve open promptly. If it lights with a whoosh or bang, stop using it and call.
