Symptoms
Viking range problems we repair
- Every burner clicking, even with the knobs off
- Flame going out on VariSimmer
- Yellow, sooty flames after a move or fuel change
- Oven igniter glowing, but the bake burner never lights
- Oven door slamming shut or not sealing
Cause
Why it happens
On most models one spark module fires every electrode, so a spill that wets one valve switch keeps the top clicking. VariSimmer needs clean ports, a flat cap and a low-flame screw set for the fuel. An aging gas-oven igniter glows but stops drawing enough current to open the safety valve. The Gourmet-Glo broiler has its own igniter.
What the technician does
- Leak-test before lighting; retest every fitting opened during the repair.
- Light each burner from high to VariSimmer and set it by measurement.
- Measure manifold pressure when several burners run weak.
- Read igniter current, or element resistance and relays on dual-fuel ovens.
Call right away if
- Smell gas? Stop cooking and close the shutoff if safe. Strong smell: leave and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
- Late ignition with a whoomp means gas is pooling; stop using the range.
- Sparking that won’t stop with knobs off; switch off the range’s breaker.
Between visits
- After a boil-over, let the top cool and dry the electrode before relighting.
- Seat each burner cap flat and centered to avoid uneven flame and clicking.
Repair or replace?
Viking ranges are built from replaceable assemblies, and the chassis, grates and cavity outlive them. Replacement deserves a look for a rusted-through cavity, a discontinued board or several failures on a very old range.
Viking models we work on
Viking Professional, 3, 5 and 7 Series and Tuscany ranges, 24 to 60 inches, all-gas, dual-fuel or induction.
Questions
Viking range repair questions
Why is my oven slow to preheat?
On gas ovens, a weakening igniter delays every ignition. On dual-fuel models, an open bake element or drifting sensor is the usual cause. A door that no longer seals adds to both.
Can a slamming oven door be fixed?
Yes. The springs that counterbalance the heavy door weaken; hinges are replaced as a matched pair, then the gasket is checked, since slamming often flattens it.
Do you work on propane ranges?
Yes. Propane uses smaller orifices, a different regulator setting and its own low-flame adjustments. On a converted range, the surface burners, bake burner and broiler are each checked; one missed orifice means soot or a weak simmer.
