Symptoms
Viking ice maker problems we repair
- Thin or cloudy cubes instead of clear ones
- Bin never filling, or output slipping week by week
- Cubes fused into clumps or a block
- Water on the floor beneath the machine
- Freezer ice maker stalled mid-turn
Cause
Why it happens
A clear-ice machine freezes moving water gradually, then purges the mineral-laden remainder to the drain. Each cycle concentrates what the supply carries, so scale narrows the distributor, thins cubes and confuses sensors. A failed hot-gas valve stalls harvest, and a kinked drain or stuck pump float leaves water in the bin. Many freezer ice maker faults are really freezer faults.
What the technician does
- Check the supply: shutoff, line, filter age, flow and pressure.
- Inspect evaporator, distributor and pump for scale; watch a full harvest.
- Trace the drain: slope, air gap, tubing, pump and float.
- In freezers, verify temperature, fill valve, fill tube, mold heater and ejector.
Call right away if
- Water spreading under cabinetry or into flooring.
- A leaking line or valve behind the unit; close the supply valve first.
- A tripping breaker or burning smell from the machine.
Between visits
- Replace the filter on schedule, sooner if output drops or cubes cloud.
- Clean and sanitize an undercounter machine at least twice a year with the manufacturer’s cleaner.
Repair or replace?
Freezer ice makers are easy calls: the module, valve or fill tube is a small part of a refrigerator you keep. Most undercounter faults are reasonable repairs; a pitted evaporator or failed compressor can rival a new machine.

Questions
Viking ice maker repair questions
Why is my undercounter machine making cloudy ice?
Usually scale, a clogged filter or low pressure is keeping water from flowing evenly over the evaporator. A full cleaning and new filter typically restore clarity.
The ice in my bin keeps melting. Is that a fault?
Not necessarily. Many clear-ice machines use an insulated, unrefrigerated bin, so ice melts slowly and the machine tops it up. Standing water or a bin that never fills points to slow production, a bin sensor or the drain.
Does my machine need a drain pump?
If a floor drain or standpipe sits low enough for continuous downward slope, gravity works; if not, a pump lifts the water. The wrong drain is a common cause of leaks.
