Cause
Why it happens
A cabinetry panel loads the hinge every time the door swings; over years the door can drop until the gasket leaks along one edge and moist air frosts the cooling surfaces. A failed defrost heater lets frost choke the freezer coil. On DynaCool models, a slowing circulation fan lets one shelf run warmer than another.
What the technician does
- Record set and actual temperatures in every compartment
- Check hinge play, panel alignment and gasket contact
- Inspect the grille and condenser; test fans, defrost and sensors
- Test the sealed system only after simpler causes are ruled out
Call right away if
- Fresh-food section above 40°F and rising, or the freezer thawing
- Water leaking from beneath or behind the cabinetry
- A burning smell, electrical buzzing or a tripped breaker
Between visits
- Vacuum the toe-kick or top grille every few months and keep it unobstructed.
- Close each door on a paper strip; if it slides out easily, the seal needs attention.
Repair or replace?
The opening, panels and connections were built for one unit, so replacement can mean new panels or cabinet work. Fans, sensors, defrost parts, gaskets and hinges are ordinary repairs; the borderline is a failed compressor or in-wall refrigerant leak on an older unit.

Why is there water under my crisper drawers?
In most units the rear wall defrosts on its own, sending meltwater to a small drain opening at the back. When that clogs, water overflows; clearing it is often the whole fix.
Why does the door alarm sound when the door is shut?
Either the door switch misreads, or a heavy panel has dropped the hinge enough to leave a gap too small to see. We check the hinge and panel, then the switch.
My ice maker stopped. Is the refrigerator failing?
Rarely. Low water pressure, a clogged filter, a failed inlet valve or a frozen fill tube can stop ice while the freezer stays cold. We test the ice maker module last.
