Symptoms
Sub-Zero wine storage faults we fix
- One zone holding while the other drifts
- Fog or droplets on the glass door
- Mist trapped between the panes
- Humming you can feel through a bottle neck
- Water on the cabinet floor or mold on labels
Cause
Why it happens
Dual-zone cabinets usually share refrigeration but not climate: each zone has its own sensor, and fans plus a damper or separate evaporator route the cold. One zone can therefore drift alone, and a drifted sensor shows the setpoint while bottles sit warm. A damper stuck open can drive a zone far too cold.
What the technician does
- Probes in water-filled bottles logged over a full cycle
- Sensor resistance, fan, damper and wiring tested for the drifting zone
- Gasket, door closure and leveling checked; condensation located on the glass
- Bottles moved only where needed, upright and handled by the base
Call right away if
- A zone several degrees above setpoint for most of a day
- Any zone dropping toward freezing, or corks starting to push out
- Water pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor
Between visits
- Keep a probe thermometer in a water bottle in each zone to track what the wine experiences.
- Vacuum the grille and toe-kick every few months so the condenser can breathe.
Repair or replace?
Heat damage to wine is irreversible, so a sensor, fan, gasket or drain fix is worth doing now. Replacement mainly comes up when an older cabinet’s compressor fails or a glass assembly or board is unavailable.
Sub-Zero models we work on
Full-size and undercounter wine units, Designer wine columns, wine-zone models with refrigerator drawers, and earlier generations.
Questions
Sub-Zero wine storage repair questions
Why does the glass fog up?
It depends where. Outside: the glass is below the room’s dew point, usually harmless. Inside: room air is getting past the gasket. Between the panes: the glass has lost its seal and needs replacing.
How can I tell if vibration reaches my wine?
With the compressor running, rest a fingertip on a bottle neck. A steady buzz means vibration is getting through: hardened isolators, a worn fan bearing, an unlevel cabinet or cabinetry contact.
Is some moisture inside the cabinet normal?
Some, yes: wine units keep air moister so corks don’t dry out. Standing water, running droplets or mold on labels are not normal and point to a blocked drain or leaking gasket.
