Symptoms
Sub-Zero freezer faults we fix
- Soft ice cream while ice cubes stay solid
- Frost inside sealed packages and on the walls
- Ice sheet spreading across the freezer floor
- Scraping or ticking behind the rear panel
- Drawer that sticks, sags or won’t close flush
Cause
Why it happens
Defrost is the usual weak point: a burned-open heater, stuck limit switch or board that stops calling for defrost lets frost pack the coil until airflow fails. Meltwater has minutes to drain, so a blocked drain, or a failed drain heater where fitted, refreezes it on the floor. Worn drawer rollers break the seal.
What the technician does
- Probe readings at several levels, compared with the display
- Defrost heater and limit switch tested; drain, fan and seals checked
- Iced coil cleared with gentle heat, never by chipping the fins
- Commanded defrost and pull-down check before the cover goes back
Call right away if
- Freezer above 10°F and rising, with food starting to soften
- Thick ice spreading across the floor or pushing a drawer open
- Freezer and refrigerator both warming at the same time
Between visits
- Load heavy items low and to the back so drawer rollers don’t strain.
- Keep drawer tracks clear of ice chips and crumbs so drawers close fully.
Repair or replace?
Defrost parts, fan motors, drains and drawer rollers cause most failures and say nothing about the refrigerator side. A leak at an accessible joint is contained; spreading corrosion or a dead compressor on an older, previously recharged unit merits a comparison with replacement.

Questions
Sub-Zero freezer repair questions
What is the scraping noise behind the back panel?
Usually ice grown far enough to touch the evaporator fan blade, a sign of a defrost problem underneath. Call promptly: a blade striking ice can break or burn out the fan motor.
Soft ice cream, hard ice cubes: what does it mean?
Ice cream softens well below 32°F while cubes stay solid, so the freezer is running well above 0°F. Usual causes: failed defrost, a weak evaporator fan or a leaking drawer seal.
Should I defrost the freezer before the technician arrives?
Unless food safety forces it, no. A full frost blanket points to defrost parts, partial frost to the sealed system, glazed ice at the bottom to the drain. Melting it erases those clues.
