Symptoms
Sub-Zero refrigerator problems we repair
- Food spoiling early while the freezer side is fine
- Display reading 38°F while a shelf thermometer disagrees
- Puddles under the crisper drawers or a wet toe-kick
- Door stopping short instead of pulling itself closed
- Clicking or buzzing from the top grille
Cause
Why it happens
Five faults cause most warm fresh-food sides: a matted condenser coil or stalled condenser fan that traps heat and short-cycles the compressor; a worn evaporator fan; a blocked defrost drain; a weak closer cartridge or flattened gasket letting room air in; and a drifted thermistor that misleads the board.
What the technician does
- Probe readings compared with the display and freezer side
- Fans, drain, closer cartridges and gasket checked before any sealed-system test
- Exact price first; fan motors, thermistors and drain parts ride in the van
- Condenser cleaned and a pull-down check before leaving
Call right away if
- Fresh-food compartment above 41°F for more than a few hours
- Water spreading from under the unit toward cabinetry or flooring
- Burning smell, repeated breaker trips, or a compressor clicking on and off
Between visits
- Twice a year, switch off the breaker and vacuum the condenser fins behind the top grille.
- Close the door on a lit flashlight in the dark; escaping light means a leaking gasket.
Repair or replace?
Fans, sensors, drains, door hardware, gaskets and boards are contained repairs. Sealed-system work costs more but is sound on most units, less so on older generations with past refrigerant work or a discontinued board.
Sub-Zero models we work on
Classic built-ins, PRO 48, Designer columns, refrigerator drawers, beverage centers and 500, 600 and 700 Series units.
Questions
Sub-Zero refrigerator repair questions
Why is there water under my crisper drawers?
Almost always a blocked defrost drain: food debris or mold stops meltwater reaching the drain pan, so it overflows inside the cabinet. Clearing and sanitizing the drain usually solves it.
Display says 38°F but food spoils early. Which is right?
Trust a thermometer in a glass of water on a middle shelf. A drifted thermistor can show a perfect reading while the shelves run several degrees warmer; measuring its resistance settles it.
What is the clicking from the top grille?
A regular click often means the compressor is trying to start and its overload is tripping: start components, voltage or a clogged condenser. A buzz or rattle is more often the condenser fan.
