Symptoms
Viking wall oven faults we repair
- Preheat dragging on or stalling below the setting
- Convection fan still, or turning with no heat
- Door still locked hours after self-clean
- Cooling blower roaring or running long after shutoff
- Lower cavity of a double staying cold
Cause
Why it happens
Viking wall ovens heat with a bake element, often hidden under the floor, a broil element and, on TruConvec models, a third element around the fan. A drifting sensor makes the board hold the wrong temperature. Self-clean is when a marginal lock motor, switch or thermal limit gives out, and a weak cooling blower shortens board life.
What the technician does
- Probe center-rack temperature before and after, adjusting the offset where allowed.
- Test element resistance and insulation, then the sensor cold and hot.
- After a self-clean failure, check the lock motor, switch and limits.
- Boards and blowers may require sliding the oven out; trim stays protected.
Call right away if
- An element heating with the oven off, or the cavity climbing far past its setting; switch off the breaker.
- Burning smell, sparks at the back wall, or a breaker tripping as it heats.
- Inner door glass cracked or shattered.
Between visits
- Use self-clean sparingly and wipe heavy spills first to spare the lock and limits.
- Keep the cooling vent near the door clear of towels and mitts.
Repair or replace?
Older Viking cutouts and trim kits do not always match current models, so replacement often means cabinet work, while elements, sensors, locks and even boards usually cost far less. Exceptions: rusting cavity enamel or a discontinued board.
Viking models we work on
Viking Professional, 3, 5 and 7 Series single, double and French-door wall ovens, 27 or 30 inches, electric or gas, and earlier generations.
Questions
Viking wall oven repair questions
My oven stayed locked after self-clean. What should I do?
Let it cool fully, which can take a couple of hours, then switch the breaker off for a minute; on many models that resets the lock. Never pry the door.
Why does the fan run after shutoff?
It cools the electronics until the oven has cooled, longer after a big bake or self-clean. If it runs for hours or never stops, a fan thermostat or relay has likely failed.
Only one cavity heats. Is the board bad?
Not necessarily. Each cavity has its own elements and sensor, so a cold one usually traces to those or a single relay. The board is suspected only after they test good.
